MARUBI MUSEUM
Albania’s new photography museum, Marubi, was designed by Casanova + Hernandez as a space that balances tradition and modernity.
The restoration of the historic building (designed by Kole Idromeno, an Albanian artist, architect and student of the famous photographer Pietro Marubi) focused on the preservation of the area’s cultural heritage while incorporating modern elements.
The museum was designed to facilitate a dynamic relationship with the city itself, with exhibitions both in its interior spaces as well as in the atrium and pedestrian walkway in front of its main entrance, and as a result it is considered a landmark of the area.
The basic principle of the architectural concept was the Mondrian pattern that is developed both in the interior space, and in the exterior, which provides impressive views to the offices, workshops and storages of the photographic archive.
Due to the architectural lighting, each exhibition room is responsive to the presentation of its exhibits and creates the right canvas for the photographic archive to be properly highlighted.
Marubi museum was shortlisted as a finalists for the 2017 European Museum of the Year award.
