SAINT MELETIOS CHURCH
The lighting study of the Holy Church of St. Meletios in Ypseni, Rhodes, was a deeply moving work, aimed at highlighting the mystical experience of the space, enhancing the spiritual dialogue between light and architecture.
The design focused on three key axes:
• Respecting the Holiness of the space
Light was chosen to ‘serve’ the sacred, rather than dominate it. Through discreet, warm levels of illumination, the natural materials (wood, frescoes) were emphasized, highlighting the color and texture of the church.
• Gradation of Mystagogy
The lighting is not homogeneous, but orchestrated in scales – from the narthex to the Holy Altar. The path towards the Divine is supported by lighting, creating a gradual inner introspection.
• Technical Precision & Discreet Technology
Cutting edge lighting fixtures were chosen, with strictly hidden placement and controlled colour temperatures (2700K – 3000K). The visual focal points have been minimized, so that the light emanates, while the source is not visible.
The study incorporated the functionality of sacred rituals, the natural flow of sunlight throughout the day, and energy awareness, using low consumption and scene lighting capabilities.
Light here becomes a bearer of silence, prayer, and elevation.
It does not speak – it suggests. It does not show – it reveals.
Technical Note:
The lighting experience in the temple is experiential and evolves dynamically according to the natural brightness, the movement of the worshippers, and the conduct of the service. The photographic captures provide a momentary depiction of the space, without being able to fully convey the changing intensities, the focused lighting direction, and the interaction with the architectural and spiritual elements.
The challenge:
holiness of the space | mystagogy
RL approach:
graduation | scaled lighting| high technology
